Record Whale Sightings

IT'S been a whale of a season along the Great Ocean Road and it seems there will be more to come. Visits by southern right whales to areas stretching from Barwon
Heads to Portland have been the best since records were first taken 20
years ago.At Warrnambool's Logans Beach where the average number
of whales at any one time has been two officials spotted 21 mothers and
calves on a single day. Mandy
Watson, senior biodiversity officer and southern right whale researcher
for the Department of Sustainability and Environment, has been
researching the whales since 1995 and says she's still "coming down
from a high" after the recent sightings. She has a lot of work in front of her now determining why numbers have suddenly increased."No one knows what caused it. They may have come from other locations; that's the most likely scenario," Ms Watson said."In
the past few years at the head of the bight and along the West
Australian coast the numbers have been increasing by 7 or 8 per cent
per annum but in this region it's been fairly stable for 20 years."They
were almost whaled to extinction and perhaps it's taken them longer to
recover. This year, though, we saw a few extra whales with calves and
lots of single whales, which we've never seen before. "There
was a lot of calving and also a lot of mating activity with usually two
males for every female and then it takes three years before a calf is
born."Ms Watson said there were still many mysteries to solve."With their migration from sub-Antarctic waters we're not sure of their route," she said."We
don't know their paths but they usually arrive on the far-south coast
in June. Normally, they like to use big sheltered bays such as Port
Fairy and Portland."DSE hopes the whales will now develop an affinity for the area."Calves tend to return to the place they were born," Ms Watson said.Story from Geelong Advertiser

Lifeboat sets sail to commemorate Admella

PORT Fairy's historic lifeboat will depart on its longest-ever ocean
voyage in the next fortnight to join commemorative events at Portland
for the 150th anniversary of one of Australia's worst maritime
disasters.Coxswain Ken Dusting is the great-great grandson of
John Dusting - one of the rescuers who helped save the survivors from
the SS Admella wreck in 1859.In huge waves and freezing
conditions rescuers saved 24 passengers and crew after the ship was
wrecked on Carpenter Rocks, near Port Macdonnell, seven days earlier. Seventy-nine people died.Mr
Dusting, who grew up at Portland and has been sailing since he was
eight years old, is looking forward to the Admella festival. "It will be good to take the old boat out. It should be an adventure," he said.Port
Fairy historic lifeboat station secretary Marten Syme said the lifeboat
would make the ocean journey from Port Fairy to Portland as part of the
festival program which aimed to celebrate the efforts of volunteers.Events will begin next Thursday at Carpenter Rocks and end at Portland on Sunday, August 16. They will include a re-enactment of the launch of the lifeboat at Portland on August 15 at 5pm.The Portland lifeboat is preserved at the Portland Maritime Discovery Centre.Mr
Syme said it was not practical to use the vessel in the re-enactment
but the sister vessel, delivered to Port Fairy in 1857 and restored in
1997, would "do the honours".The 9.8-metre-long,
self-righting, open-decked lifeboat will sail from Port Fairy to
Portland in the next two weeks, depending on weather and wind."The voyage is likely to take about 10 hours, requiring endurance and certainly some rowing to position the vessel."The Warrnambool Coast Guard vessel will stand ready to tow the lifeboat if conditions are not suitable. The
crew comprised Mr Dusting, Robin Haldane, Robert Whitehead, John Artis,
Roy and Linda Carson, Ray Chandler, Steve Dawkins, Roger Haldane, Colin
May, Jeff Sproal and Mr Syme.BY MARY ALEXANDER "The Standard"

Killer whales attack southern right calf

LIKE a scene from a David Attenborough documentary, killer whales hunted a baby southern right whale in Port Fairy bay.Two
giant ocean hunters chased the calf from its mother and launched a
spectacular attack that lasted for almost an hour and was watched by
three fishermen."The killer whales kept rolling over on
top of the calf as the mother tried to protect it," Clark Smock told
The Standard yesterday."It was very spectacular. They
were sailing nine feet out of the water. In all my years at sea I've
never seen anything like it before."At one point we could see the mother slapping around, probably very anxious."Mr
Smock, a former abalone diver, took friends Bruce Black and David
Hounslow out on a snapper fishing trip last Thursday when they noticed
the spectacle about 500 metres away in the bay.Mr Hounslow described the killer whales' fins as "like the conning towers of a submarine"."The killer whales looked like they were set to have lunch," he said."They seemed to be giving the whale and calf a hard time. We certainly saw quite a lot of activity from the killer whales."Mr
Black said at first it looked like all the whales were southern rights,
but it became obvious killer whales were trying to separate the calf
from its mother."There was a lot of activity then they dispersed."It
appeared the calf survived the ordeal as there were no reports of a
carcass on local beaches and three sets of mothers and calves were
reported off the south-west coast this week. News Article from The Standard, Warrnamboolhttp://www.standard.net.au

Whales sighted in Pt Pairy

TOURIST operators are having a whale of a time in the south-west, with
several of the giant marine mammals lapping up the region's rugged
coast. While visitor numbers plummeted across Victoria in the
past three months, Warrnambool City Council predicted the whales'
arrival would fuel a tourist boom for the south-west.The council's tourism services manager Peter Abbott said the whale watching season had started later than past years."I was hoping they would come in time for the (July) school holidays," he said."The lack of whales well into June is a concern to the tourism industry as this assists in developing off peak tourism spending."But now they have arrived, it's fantastic."The
Department of Sustainability and Environment had reported humpback and
southern right whale sightings from Geelong to Portland. On Saturday, a southern right whale and two dolphins entertained visitors at Warrnambool's Logans Beach whale viewing platform.Mr Abbott said people were coming from across Victoria to see the city's whales."We do have a few international visitors, but they aren't coming to Warrnambool specifically to see the whales," he said.Portland
Visitor Information Centre's Brooke King said southern right and
humpback whales were also swimming close to the port's shores."We had two southern rights stay in the bay for the whole day the other day," she said.Whales
were sighted off Cape Nelson, Cape Bridgewater and the Lee Breakwater.
Port Campbell and Port Fairy also had confirmed sightings.BY JARED LYNCHThe Warrnambool Standard

Huge Tuna caught off Pt Fairy

During a half-hour battle, Bruce Ludeman, Sam Baulch, Steve Rhook
and Lindsay Monaghan reeled in the catch of a lifetime, 35 kilometres
south of Port Fairy.Warrnambool Off Shore Fishing Club officials weighed the 100-kilogram tuna at the breakwater."There
wasn't a lot of fight in the tuna but when it weighs 100 kilos it's
still a test of your endurance to get it o on board," Mr Ludeman said."Because of its weight, there was a lot of drag set on the reel but we managed to land it in about half an hour."Mr
Ludeman said it was unusual to catch such a large tuna at this time of
year, with January to May considered the peak period for catches off
the south-west coast. The tuna would be used for sandwiches and sushi.Several big catches have been landed this year, with a 123-kilogram tuna caught near Portland in April.

WIN $1000 - Join the Buy Locally campaign

THE Standard's Buy Locally challenge is receiving widespread support -- from Cooriemungle to Yambuk. South-west residents are signing on in droves to the campaign, which aims to protect the region's jobs. They are pledging to shop locally first, whether buying a car, stereo or paperback novel. They are pledging to shop locally first, whether buying a car, stereo or paperback novel.Yesterday, politicians, office workers, small businesses, teachers and students were among those to take up the challenge.Wannon MP David Hawker made the pledge less than 12 hours after the campaign was launched. He said he was continually amazed at what goods and services were available in the south-west."Shopping
locally gives people not only the opportunity to continue with their
business but to consider expansion which is important in terms of
growth," Mr Hawker said.South West Coast MP Denis Napthine was also quick to join the campaign. He said had been a long-time local shopper. "I shop locally wherever I can," he said. The Standard's campaign won support from overseas, with columnist Kate Gane, who is in Japan, signing the pledge. The
challenge centres on supporting the south-west's 6000 businesses so
they can continue to grow and employ 48,000 people. Plus, studies show
that every $100 spent in the region is likely to generate an extra $40.Camperdown
poultry seller, The Chookshed, came on board on day one of the
campaign, while readers from Hamilton, Mortlake, Pomborneit, Port
Fairy, Birregurra, Cobden and Terang took up the challenge.More
than 100 people have signed the pledge. Warrnambool-based financial
institution South West Credit will give the 1000th person to join the
campaign $1000 -- the only condition is that the money be spent within
the region to protect jobs.

Divers confident of abalone industry come

Abalone divers in south-west Victoria are confident
the industry will bounce back from a disease that has crippled it for
almost three years. The virus, ganglioneuritis, began infecting wild abalone in the south-west in June, 2006.
Since then, divers have been fishing to a greatly-reduced quota.
The Western Abalone Divers Association spent the weekend counting
stock and looking for signs of the virus, Ganglioneuritis, around Port
Fairy.
Spokesman Harry Peeters says they found promising signs of regeneration.
"Not only have some of the abalone survived but they've also
continued to breed and we're very hopeful in the coming years that our
stocks will return to somewhat near-normal," he said.
"There's absolutely no sign of ganglioneuritis in the western zone from the Hopkins River at Warrnambool to South Australia.
"I'm confident that within the next 12 months we will be able to take some quota out of there, I would hope, very much so.
"As far as it getting back to the levels that it was pre-virus, I think that's still going to take some years."New Iyem provided by ABC News http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/05/25/2579633.htm?si te=ballarat

Port Fairy NO1 in Victoria

Like a jewel in a crown, our Port shines - PORT Fairy is the state's most recommended tourist destination and the fifth most popular spot in the country, according to a major tourism magazine. The village has been listed ahead of Margaret River in Western Australia and Byron Bay in NSW by a panel of tourism experts ranking the country's 100 best towns. The panel rated towns for the Sydney-based Australian Traveller magazine, based on just one question."Regardless of where this town is located, would you recommend to a friend to add one hour to their trip to visit this town?"Mandy King, who with her husband Ashley owns a five-bedroom holiday rental property overlooking the Moyne River, has noticed big increases in the number of tourists passing through the town, even in the last two years."You drive around the streets just out of season and the streets are still full of people, where as in past years it was just at the major times," she said.A range of events at different times of the year, in addition to the town's annual folk festival, helped maintain a steady stream of visitors to the town, she said. The Kings encouraged golfing groups to stay at their Riverhouse property, to tap into the popular courses at both Port Fairy and Warrnambool. One of the town's pioneering tourism operators and former Port Fairy Borough mayor, Noel Adamson, attributed the town's listing to its historic character."We have been able over the years to keep out high-rise building and keep our historic village together and that's what people like, apart from the natural attributes of the river and the sea," he said.Mr Adamson said he established some of the first quality apartments in the town in the mid-1970s on Griffiths Street. The growth of accommodation providers in the town since then has helped foster better shops, restaurants and cafes, he said."It was unknown if people would pay for quality flats way back then but they did," he said.Port Fairy's top-five national ranking would only attract more visitors to the town, Mr Adamson believed.
Tuna biting from Port Fairy

THE hottest bite this week is from Port Fairy to South Australia's Port MacDonnell. Along that stretch, southern bluefin tuna to 34kg and albacore are being caught in big numbers. Bob
McPherson, at Portland, reports the tuna are being caught in 129m to
1000m of water, mostly trolling skirted lures and bibless minnows.Yellowtail kingfish to 14kg continue to be caught along the North Shore at Portland on squid and lures. On
the freshwater scene, the Gellibrand River at Princetown has produced
small numbers of brown trout from 1kg to 3.4kg on hard-bodied lures. On the Murray River, Rod Mackenzie reports Swan Hill and Nyah have Murray cod to 65cm on bardi grubs and cheese.Reports are better between Mildura and Wentworth, where cod to 27kg, redfin and yellowbelly are being caught on lures. Geoff
Lacey, at Tawonga, says fly fishers using dry flies are catching
pan-size brown and rainbow trout in the upper Ovens River.Best flies are size 16 to 18 Adams Parachute, Humpy, Royal Wulff, Red Tag and various beetle and hopper patterns. The
Kiewa River at Tawonga is low but holding good numbers of trout. Mick
Hall, at Eildon, says Eildon Pondage is full of trout, but anglers
continue to stay away.In Port Phillip Bay, Brett Torossi reports
schools of salmon are working inside Port Phillip Heads between the
South Channel and Point Nepean.Calamari squid are in good numbers along the weed beds from Rye to Sorrento.Pinkies are in large numbers along the eastern seaboard in 4-6m of water and taking pilchard and soft plastic lures.Best reports of King George whiting have come from Mt Eliza to Fishermans Beach and Indented Head to St Leonards. Most about 40cm, but bigger whiting to 47cm have come from Point Nepean. Best baits are fresh squid, pipi and mussel.Western Port has King George whiting to 44cm, caught along the Middle Spit and Tortoise Head Bank on pipis.Gummy
sharks to 20kg, average size about 5kg, are being caught from shore at
Somers, Balnarring, Shoreham and Point Leo. Best baits are salmon
fillets, squid and eel. In the Gippsland Lakes, Metung has salmon being caught on lures, and bream and flathead from the boardwalk on prawns. The Mitchell River has bream near the mouth and estuary perch at Picnic Point. In the Tambo River, bream and flathead are biting near the mouth on prawn.Hollands Landing is fishing well for bream and flathead on local prawn, sandworm and soft plastic lures.Lake
Tyers has bream and flathead taking peeled prawn, pilchard strips and
soft plastic lures in the channel and Fishermans Landing. At Marlo, the estuary is producing bream, luderick, estuary perch, flathead, trevally, salmon and tailor.Bream ranging from 30cm to 50cm are being caught from the slips to Lake Corringle.Best time is change of the tide, with best results coming on black crab and prawn.Luderick
are schooling around the rock groins, some captures being 50cm on
sandworm. Estuary perch are holding on most structures, taking live
prawn, sandworm and luresMallacoota Inlet has bream in the Top
Lake taking prawn baits, and dusky flathead in the Bottom Lake being
caught on soft plastic lures.Bream are on the chew from the slips to Lake Corringle. Most captures seem to be on change of the tides, with best results on black crab, live prawn and frozen prawn. http://www.weeklytimesnow.com.au/article/2009/02/27/56185_fi shing.html

Hunt for bandits: Supermarket armed robbe

ARMED bandits stole "a large sum of cash" from Colin Cleary's Port
Fairy IGA supermarket on Monday night but he is just relieved his staff
escaped unharmed. Mr Cleary's comments came as detectives
from the Melbourne-based Armed Crime Taskforce arrived in the town
yesterday to investigate the brazen robbery. A shaken Mr
Cleary was grateful that only his 46-year-old store attendant, who
wanted to remain anonymous, was in the store at the time of the heist,
cleaning the floors. "No one wants a gun pointed at their head . . . he was quite obviously shaken up," Mr Cleary said of his staff member. The
two masked men entered the shop from the rear entrance, produced a
sawn-off rifle or shotgun and demanded the attendant open the safe,
before taking cash and fleeing on foot down a laneway leading onto
Barclay Street. "There's no such thing as a dead hero. He did exactly the right thing, just did what they wanted him to do," Mr Cleary said. Mr
Cleary's IGA Everyday Supermarket has been broken into a couple of
times in the past 11 years but he never imagined it would be hit by
armed robbers, especially after the relaxed weekend of the Port Fairy
Folk Festival. "Just the fact that there's people
walking around with guns I suppose is a bit scary in itself, especially
in Port Fairy," he said.Police are appealing for
information to help them find two men, aged between 30 and 45, about
175 centimetres (five foot, 10 inches) tall, and of medium to solid
build. Detective Senior Constable Richard Hughes, of
Warrnambool police Criminal Investigation Unit, said one of the
offenders was wearing dark blue jeans, white runners and a very
distinctive black Adidas hooded windcheater with a large, old-style
emblem on the back and three white stripes down the sleeves."It
appears to be very well executed, well managed and obviously planning
had gone into it," Detective Senior Constable Hughes said. Those with information about the crime are urged to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppers.com.auThe Standard

Medicinal poppies could be grown in Victo

Pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline, is planning to conduct poppy
field trials in Victoria this year, to see if it can expand commercial
production beyond Tasmania.
Tasmania has had a 40-year southern hemisphere monopoly on growing the
lucrative phamaceutical crop, though GlaxoSmithKline already processes
Tasmanian-grown poppy straw at its plant near Port Fairy in Victoria.
GSK research and field manager, Dr Mike Doyle, says the company has now
applied to get approval for a trial to establish the potential for
future commercial operations in Victoria.

"The real critical issue at the moment, and has been for a couple of years, is security of supply into the market," he says. ABC NEWS article:http://www.abc.net.au/rural/news/content/200903/s2513116.htm
"The last thing we want to do is fall short on meeting customer demand,
and force them to encourage new producers, which ultimately would be to
the detriment of Tasmania."

The Tasmanian Poppy Growers Association says it will be having in-depth discussions with GSK about its future orders and plans.
However, chief executive Keith Rice says the International Narcotics
Control Board, that regulates the industry, doesn't specify where
poppies are grown in Australia.
"Australia has an obligation and is a signatory to the treaty to have a
secure and reliable of narcotic raw material for scientific and medical
purposes," he says.

"Provided it meets those obligations, there isn't any requirement why the crop has to be grown in Tasmania."
Mr Rice says the association is setting up a study to look at the
availability of land in Tasmania for poppy crops, to see if there's
enough as the industry grows.
